This project concerns the coating of blends of pigments and bioactive agents onto paper substrate. The effect of the physical properties of particles (e.g. size, shape and colloidal) and their distribution on the consolidation mechanisms and the final coating structure characteristics will be investigated both numerically through simulation and experimentally. For this purpose, phenomenological particulate models will be developed by adapting and extending the capabilities of existing ones based on the discrete element (DEM) and lattice Boltzmann (LBM) methods. Experiments will be made on various coating devices and will involve suitable characterization methods.
